What I Reach For When I Want To Feel Better

Sometimes life can feel overwhelming and in those moments you don’t need advice, plans, or actions. Sometimes, you just need softness.

There is a difference between mustering up the energy to fix your life and feeling better. One asks for effort you don’t have and the other meets you where you are at. When emotional burn out creeps in, even small things can feel heavy. Feeling better does not require large acts, it can be small, achievable actions that connect you back with your body, even if it is briefly.

A cup of something warm.

Tea, hot chocolate, or warm water with a slice or lemon, there is an instant comfort in the way the warmth spreads from your hands through to your chest. Like a hug on the inside, it’s simple, soothing and grounding.

Music that gets me.

Whatever form it takes, this is the kind of music that connects you to your soul, or simply body. It draws you inward or invites you to release the tension through movement. It can be sad, happy, empowering or soft, but it speaks for you when you can’t find the words to speak for yourself.

A notebook and pen.

Sometimes when our mind is full, it needs to spill somewhere. This can be released through journaling or art. It may not solve all your problems at the moment but it is an outlet that allows you to feel lighter in the safest way, with and by yourself, through expression.

Watching something that holds me.

Putting on a movie, series or short video that resonates with your mood. It doesn’t have to be life changing. It can be a gentle romance, a nostalgic childhood favourite or adventurous escape, but in that moment you get to step out of your head to feel comforted and distracted with minimal pressure.

Movement that doesn’t demand.

Going for a 30 minute walk. Stepping out for air. Dancing alone in your room. Stretching without a routine. Small, relaxed movements release the tension and lower cortisol without draining your energy.

A soft spot for the soul.

Standing in the sun. Going to your favourite cafe. Your favourite spot in the house. They are the spaces that hold a quiet comfort for you to breathe, observe or just exist with no pressure. You are in your chosen sanctuary and allow yourself to perceive the world without needing to forcefully engage with it.
